i recently saw a Kelty brand tent called the zenith 2 for around $60. now i know you get what you pay for, but im pretty poor, with college and my vehicle eating all my cash. REI has some nice tents, i was looking at the REI passage for $150. would i be able to get by with the cheaper Kelty brand tent from target or should i save for the REI tent? i also plan to use the tent for backpacking, and i live in arizona, so it doesn'tt get all that cold nor do we usually get bad weather.

I used a $35.00 dome tent with fiberglass poles in my early years of back-packing (early 1980's) and that was all I had for almost 15 years until I got my REI 4-Season. Kelty makes a good tent dollar for dollar. It will be better than some up to $100, but will not compare to a $600 tent. The thing is to know the limitations. Use guy-points in rain and wind, keep it clean, use nic-wax and seam sealer regularly, and stick to mild climates. I still have and occasionally use my 30 year old cheapie. If this is all your budget allows, then it beats sleeping without a tent or simply not going on a hike! I've used plastic sheeting, tube-tents, and really cheap "Pup" tents, this Kelty will seem like luxury compared to those! I can be a bit of a gear snob, but I don't see any inherent problems with this Kelty if used as intended.

Me and a few friends are doing an interrial around europe for 22 days in april next year. We are planning on spending a lot of time camping during our trip and need some ideas for tents. Obviuosly it will need to be lightweight aswell as big enough for a 6foot + man aswell as a backpack. This is the one I use. Very light weight, though you're not going to get your bag in there. But there is a vestibule that you can put you bag in. The tent is long enough to accommodate 2, 6 feet tall guys, though it's not very wide. But it's comfy enough. You can find them online for less than the price quoted here.

General rule is if a tent says two person, it's a one. Says 3 person, it's for 2 and so on. gotta have room for your gear, not just your person. I've got a Coleman Hooligan 3. Has an awesome vestibule and tons of tie downs so the wind isn't taking that thing anywhere. I got mine on a thanksgiving sale for 49.99USD. I'm not sure what they run for right now. i want a nice light tent for backpacking through central america. 2 person so it can fit me and my backpack. do you recommend any specific brands or specific tents that you have used?? i have a kelty pack, and that has served me well.

i use a kelty crestone 1 as a solo tent... i think a crestone 2 will do the job fine... considering the weather in central america is somewhat the same here in the philippines. HTH
