4 out of 5 stars Not really a camper...   August 16, 2010

I bought this tent, sight unseen, online because I was attending a music festival. I bought it because it looked pretty weather sturdy without my having to seam-seal or silicone it. Sure enough, it held up to a thunder storm without any difficulty. My only reservation about it is the doorway is kind of small and you sort of have to crumple yourself into a squat to get in and out of it but that's probably true for most tents of this size. It worked out fine for me, alone; there was room for a single sleeping pad and all of my stuff. I'd have hated to have the three people in there it claims to hold but experienced campers probably already know that the numbers are a bit exagerated. All in all, not bad for the price - though it did not come with the "footprint" that was claimed and I had to use a tarp.

5 out of 5 stars Good for group backpacking!   August 5, 2010

Most people wouldn't use a 4 man tent for backpacking, but I go group backpacking, and I'm sure someone out there might also.

For it's size, this is pretty light-weight. The poles fit easily into an internal frame pack, as does the rest of the tent. The poles, though fiberglass, have held up nicely so far. They are about 2 inches longer than anyone would ever like them to be, which keeps the tent pulled very tight, and gives it some extra support. Nothing is worse than a wobbly tent in a thunder storm.

I spent a few nights with this, camping off trail, and it rained... a lot... Though there are tags all over the tent that say "do not have near a fire" I started up my whisperlite in the vestibule, using the heat shield to protect the fly. After the initial burst of flame, there was plenty of room to cook in the dryness of the tent; which also raised the temp a good 5-10 degrees.

The tent stands pretty well without being staked down, it is reasonably lightweight. The vestibule is large enough to hold 4 people's packs, so there is no reason 4 people couldn't comfortably sleep inside. Best of all (and why I got a new tent) after a few days of rain, the tent was still dry!

4 out of 5 stars A good 3 person tent for 2 people   July 31, 2010
A. Benenson
We've used this tent (2 of us) for car camping half a dozen times and it's OK for 2 people, but it would definitely be crowded for 3.

This tent is quite easy and fast to set up and tear down; once I did it once I never needed to look at the instructions again (and in a nice touch, the instructions are printed on fabric which is sown inside the carrying case - so you won't lose them or wreck them).

We've used it in the rain once and stayed nice and dry.

The interior has enough room for a queen air mattress with a little space to spare (maybe 8" on both sides and at the foot). Not much in the way of conveniences inside - there's a smallish pocket hanging on each side, and that's it. It would have been nice if there was a loop in the top to hang a lantern, but there isn't.

The "vestibule" is nice but not perfect. On the plus side, it increases privacy; even when the outer door is fully open, you can't see the entire interior of the tent from outside. It's also of course a good place to keep your stuff that won't fit inside the tent. But on the down side it makes getting in and out of the tent more awkward, and stuff in the vestibule is not protected from critters or water flowing along the ground. It's also worth noting that the way the tent is designed, you can't put on the fly without also setting up the vestibule - otherwise you end up with the front of the fly just kind of flopped down in front of the tent entrance.

Overall the construction, design, and materials used in this tent seem good, with three exceptions:
1) The stakes are thin and too easily bent.
2) There's a spot where the zipper for the inner door is really hard to pull because of excess tension; it's no fun to have to fight with a sticky zipper when you're being pursued by bloodthirsty mosquitoes, and my guess is this is the first thing that will wear out.
3) You'll never get the tent rolled up as small as it was when new, but the carrying case was clearly designed to handle that size and nothing more. Squeezing everything back in is a chore but doable.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible Experience   July 12, 2010

I purchased this tent from Amazon via the internet for $76. I used this tent on a camping trip at Inlet,NY. I did read the reviews for this tent and they all sounded good and that is why I purchased this tent. Setting up the tent is a little confusing and there are a total of 18 cheap tent stakes that are about the same diameter as a framing nail.If there was a strong wind it would make a nice kite with all the guide string for the rain fly, 13 stakes with string to anchor the rain fly. It took me and my girfriend about 45 mins. to set this tent up, this is the longest it ever took for me to set a tent up and I have owned 4 or 5 in my life. Thank God it did not rain while I was setting this tent up. Later that night shortly before we went into the tent it started to rain moderatly and just as I was about to fall asleep I felt water dripping on the side of my face and at first thought I was dreaming, then I grabbed a flashlight, then I noticed that the tent was leaking from a seam just above the rear vent and it was a steady drip which went on all night since it rained the whole night. I bought this tent because the reviews said it would keep you dry and right on the box it came in says "Guaranteed to keep you dry". It did not rain the 2nd. night, Thank God! Finally when it was time to pack up, packing away the tent was even more confusing then setting up the tent, what I mean is trying to fold this odd shape rain fly with all the strings, I had to lay it on the ground and you need someone to help you fold it, and it's a challenge to say the least. On a ranking of 1- 10, 10 being the best, I would rank it a 1.
